Starwood currently operates more than 240 hotels in its Europe, Africa and Middle East (EAME) division, and will open a further 50 by 2012.
They include the Sheraton Batumi (Georgia) and the Sheraton Rhodes this spring and the Sheraton Milan Malpensa this summer.
Starwood will also continue to introduce more of its brands to new markets, with W hotels opening in London, St Petersburg, Paris, Milan and Amman, and Aloft making its European debut in Brussels this autumn.
Greece will get a new Westin Resort and The Luxury Collection-branded The Romanos in Costa Navarino, while African additions include the Le Méridien Oran Hotel & Convention Centre and Four Points by Sheraton properties in Lagos and Tripoli.
Finally, St Regis is slated to open five new hotels in the Middle East and the Indian Ocean over the next five years.
Elsewhere, Marriott International plans to double its European portfolio by 2015 from 174 hotels and 40,000 rooms currently.
Seven of its 18 brands are already represented in the region – Ritz-Carlton, Bvlgari, JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Renaissance Hotels, Courtyard by Marriott and Marriott Executive Apartments – while its first European Residence Inn opens in Munich next year.
The group’s development pipeline in Europe comprises nearly 30 projects, including the Renaissance Moscow Monarch Centre Hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott Budapest and the JW Marriott Hotel Ankara, all scheduled to open in 2010.
Over a third of Marriott’s current pipeline and about half of its full-service openings this year are outside of North America.
